The following are some of the key attributes that have made Canadian pet food popular worldwide:
- Exceptional quality
- Product diversity
- Excellent import value
- Locally-sourced raw materials
- Availability of dry food, semi-moist food, moist food and treats
- Branded and private label products
In order to export, Canadian companies must adhere to Canadian manufacturing requirements, as well as those from countries to which they export including the United States and countries in Asia and Europe.
Canadian pet food exported to the United States must meet the provisions of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA Animal Food Rule), labelling as well as ingredient guidelines set out by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) plus any state and local laws. In many countries, our members must not only meet distribution laws for pet food, but also many laws that regulate the distribution of human food.
